Not What They Were Perceived To Be
By: Matt Burke
It’s a shame Bob Lobel is retiring soon.
‘Cause the old line of “why can’t we get players like that” would have capped my Monday night off something wicked.
Joe Johnson owned the Celtics Monday night. Ditto Josh Smith.
I’m beginning to the think the C’s can’t hang with ultra athletic teams (read: Philly down the stretch, and the Hawks, who are now two games away from sending me on a Summer-long drinking binge which may end up with me dabbling in black-tar heroin for a week or eight).
The Celtics are good. But they actually may not be great and only the great ones walk away with the Larry O’Brien Trophy in June.
All of their flaws were exposed, Miley Cirus-style, during the past two games and, quite frankly, ANY team out West would bury the C’s right now.
Is the sky falling? Almost. But hope remains. This is still a team with three guys that have waited their whole entire careers for this Spring. Granted, one of them enjoys flashing gang signs along the way (that being the “Captain”), but hey, this is still the NBA. What, you don’t think Bob Cousy was representing the Holy Cross Cripps back in the late ’50s?
At this point the Celtics could still rattle off 10 wins in a row, go to the NBA Finals in Moses Malone-like fashion and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised. But let’s just say they meet the Spurs there. I would be rushing to Vegas to bet on a sweep.
Look, A LOT can change from not only here to June, but from here to Wednesday night. But make no mistake, the jig is up.
The Boston Celtics are far from a lock to win No. 17.

The Hawks have exposed the Celtics’ biggest flaw: They cant guard young athletic players that can get to the basket and shoot mid-long range jump shots. The nightmare I had last night didn’t include charecters with first AND last names (Joe Johnson and Josh Smith), it was all about Kobe and Lebron.
